Cars 2 Movie Plot
Mater Joins Lightning McQueen
for the World Grand Prix

British agent Leland Turbo opens the scene in the Cars 2 movie submitting an urgent video transmission to fellow British spy Finn McMissile. Unfortunately the video cuts out before Turbo can finish.

On a dark and stormy sea, a small boat with a dapper-looking Aston Martin Finn McMissile aboard stops uncertainly at the proper coordinates. Suddenly two guard boats tell the small boat to leave and as it does, McMissile latches onto the side of one of the guard boats.

McMissile discovers a vast array of oil platforms in the middle of the ocean with the evil scientist Professor Z commanding a group of old beat-up cars. Lemons. Finn McMissile takes pictures of a strange looking camera being shown to Professor Z before he is seen. He narrowly makes his escape but doesn't know what Professor Z is up to.

Phone Call from Radiator Springs

Meanwhile Lightning McQueen has been away all racing season and has come home to Radiator Springs. Mater couldn't be more excited about his best friend's return and is impressed that he won the Piston Cup for the fourth time. While Lightning McQueen is proud of his accomplishments, he still misses his mentor Doc Hudson, for whom the race is dedicated.

The two friends have fun together and later McQueen takes his girl Sally Carrera out on date where he learns of the first World Grand Prix on television. This race is sponsored by a former oil tycoon named Miles Axlerod as he promotes his new biofuel called Allinol.

Mater gets angry when he hears the arrogant Italian F1 car Francesco Bernoulli going on about how he's so much faster than Lightning McQueen. Mater gets on the phone and calls into the show, causing a commotion in the bar area. Lightning McQueen comes in to see what's going on and he takes over the phone call and accepts Axlerod's challenge to race in the World Grand Prix and take his Radiator Springs pit crew with him.

Sally reminds McQueen that he's never brought Mater to any of his races. She makes him feel a bit guilty about that and so he agrees to take Mater along.

Tokyo Party

The two friends share an exciting plane ride into the bright lights and bustling city of Tokyo, Japan. They are awed by the beautiful and strange sights.

However, McQueen's fears about Mater's behavior finally come true during an elaborate pre-race party. Throughout the event, Mater creates havoc and embarrasses McQueen with his shenanigans.

Meanwhile, Finn McMissile meets up with fellow agent Holley Shiftwell as they search for an American spy at the party. The American infiltrated the crew at the oil platforms and escaped with a photo of the car running the entire operation. At the party, the plan is for the American field agent to pass the photo on to McMissile.

Mater causes a scene in front of the audience after eating spicy hot wasabi, thinking it was pistachio ice cream. Lightning McQueen, embarrassed, instructs Mater to go to the bathroom. He enters an fancy Japanese bathroom that squirts water and bubbles in all sorts of places - just hilarious to watch.

The American informant, Rod "Torque" Redline, drops his cover as he enters the same bathroom, ready to pass his information. But as he waits, he is confronted by the Gremlin and Pacer thugs. Rod manages to secretly slip the device with the classified information into Mater's undercarriage. Mater doesn't know a thing and Rod is captured.

Mater leaves the bathroom, Holley cannot believe that Mater's the spy. She talks to Mater and they agree to meet at the race the next day.

Rod is brought to Professor Z where he reveals to the agent that Allinol by itself is harmless, but when exposed to an electromagnetic pulse, it explodes. The professor demonstrates the special camera and explains to Rod that it emits electromagnetic pulses.

At 50% power, Gremlin and Pacer try and find out who Rod gave the information to. Rod doesn't speak and the camera goes to 75% power. Rod's eyes shift when Mater's picture is brought up. The thugs know it is Mater as the camera powers up to 100% and destroys Rod.

Let the Race Begin!

The next scene in the Cars 2 movie is the Tokyo circuit of the World Grand Prix. Francesco Bernoulli again taunts Lightning McQueen at the start, leaving McQueen more determined than ever to beat him.

Mater's with the pit crew and is spotted after Gremlin and Pacer kill off a race car with their special camera. Professor Z's henchmen zero-in on Mater, fast approaching him in the pits.

During this time, Holley Shiftwell surveys Mater and recognizes the henchmen coming in for Mater. She breaks in his communication line with Lightning McQueen and tells him to leave. Mater thinks she wants a date and their conversation disrupts McQueen's race.

While she leads him away, Finn McMissile manages to hold off the bad guys. But the end result is that Mater caused McQueen to lose the race. McQueen is so frustrated that he tells Mater he doesn't want his help any longer.

Deep Into the Spy World

Mater is saddened by how things turned out between him and McQueen and he goes to the airport for the trip home. Finn McMissile is there too and tries to find out who Mater is, and is nearly caught by Z's henchmen, who have caught on to their whereabouts.

An exciting chase scene ensues in the Cars 2 movie over the airport's runway with McMissile pulling Mater behind him, then the other way around as McMissile tries to stop the lemons. Sid the jet airplane swoops in just in time as they get onboard at the last second.

On board, Holley Shiftwell and Finn McMissile download the photo that's stuck to Mater's undercarriage and Mater can identify the picture of the engine. Holley and Finn still believe Mater is a spy and they convince him to help them after they learn about a secret meeting of all the lemon loser cars in Porto Corsa, Italy from Tomber, an informant in Paris.

Porto Corsa is also the next World Grand Prix location in the Cars 2 movie and Mater is disguised as one of the city's tow trucks. He manages to infiltrate the secret meeting and discovers Z's plan to discredit the new Allinol fuel and influence all cars to go back to oil.

During this time, the second race is taking place with Francesco Bernoulli at a home advantage. McQueen and Bernoulli are neck and neck in the lead, and McQueen wins. Both are unaware that many of the cars behind them have been destroyed by Professor Z's electromagnetic camera.

After this race, all cars reject Allinol and Sir Axlerod insists that the last race in London go on, but without the new fuel. However, McQueen states on camera that he will continue using Allinol, based on his friend Fillmore's advice. Seeing this on TV, Professor Z declares that McQueen must be killed at the last race so that Allinol will be finished for good.

When Mater hears this, he accidentally blows his cover and is captured, along with Holley and Finn. Mater is knocked out with fumes and has a humiliating dream about how idiotic he's been behaving.

London Circuit

Mater wakes from his disturbing dream hanging from the inside of Big Bentley in London in the Cars 2 movie. Holley Shiftwell and Finn McMissile are tied to one of the giant cogs to be crushed within minutes. Holley and Finn finally believe Mater when he insists that he is not a spy.

Sally, Flo, Ramone and Big Red show up at the pit with Lightning McQueen. They arrive after McQueen calls to talk to Mater but discover he isn't there. Ramone says that Sheriff is already speaking with Scotland Yard and Flo informs him that Sarge has contacted his friends in the British Military. Sally encourages McQueen to focus on his race since his friends have it covered.

Pacer and Gremlin enter Big Bentley to personally show Mater how they are going to destroy McQueen with the camera. They point the camera toward McQueen as he races down the track below, but nothing happens. The camera is on full force, but Lightning McQueen keeps going.

Professor Z calls Pacer and Gremlin after the failed attempt and informs them to go to the backup plan, to blow up a bomb they planted in McQueen's pit the next time he pulls in. The two leave laughing in the Cars 2 movie.

Mater manages to escape by wearing out the ropes with his voice-activated automatic guns he's equipped with as they whir around with no bullets. Holley and Finn insist Mater leave to save his friend.

Holley and Finn narrowly escape being crushed when Holley reverses the polarity on a giant battery with her taser. They break free of the ropes but just before leaving, they see Mater's air filter. They then realize that Mater's escape was too easy and that the bomb was planted on him as he drove to the pit.

Finn McMissile warns Mater about the bomb planted in his engine and tells him to get away. Just then Lightning McQueen pulls up, pleased and relieved to see his friend. Mater runs off, telling McQueen to stay away, but McQueen follows Mater, completely unaware of the danger.

McQueen chases Mater out onto the track, but Mater manages to stay ahead. Just as Professor Z is about to detonate the bomb remotely, Mater voice activates his rocket engines and speeds away with McQueen grabbing onto his tow hook. This puts them out of range of the bomb signal, infuriating Z.

Z flees, pursued by McMissile and is eventually captured and arrested. Holley keeps the bad lemons at bay from Mater and she catches up with him in the streets of London to deactivate the bomb. This is the first that McQueen hears of the bomb. McMissile instructs Z to disarm the bomb, but he cannot since it is voice-activated.

Just as they are surrounded by the lemon menions, Red comes in and saves them when he blows a hard stream of water at them. As the lemons try and retreat, Sarge and his group of British Military surround them and take them into custody.

Guido tries to undo the bolts on the bomb, but none of his wrenches fit. This is an ah-ha moment for Mater as he figures out that the mastermind behind the Allinol plot is Miles Axlerod!

Mater and McQueen get to the finish line area where the Queen is and forces Axlerod to deactivate the bomb. Mater explains Axlerod's discovery of the large oil fields and his plan to turn everyone off at the thought of using an alternative fuel.

For his bravery and cleverness, Mater is knighted by the Queen in the Cars 2 movie. Then they all go home to Radiator Springs, where they hold their own Grand Prix, just for the love of racing and good friends.

McQueen asks Fillmore about using the Allinol in the last race and why he didn't blow up. Fillmore admits to replacing his organic fuel with the Allinol in the Cars 2 movie.

Holley Shiftwell and Finn McMissile show up in Radiator Springs, too, and ask Mater if he is interested in joining them on another mission. Mater declines, but asks to keep the rocket engines, which he uses to race around town.
