Pixar Shorts:
Mike's New Car

Pixar Short Film Mike's New Car

Mike's New Car is the first of the Pixar shorts to be made as an extension of a feature film and created exclusively for home entertainment. Monsters Inc. was the feature film that had much success in theaters and people couldn't get enough of the quirky creatures that populated Monstropolis.

When the was released, fans got to see a short film that gave them more of the feature film they already loved. What a great idea!

Co-directors Pete Docter and Roger Gould decided to take another day in the life of Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sulley" Sullivan and continue the story. The comedy duo of these two Monsters Inc. characters would again be played to the maximum, with Mike getting hurt and frustrated in an exaggerated way to make the Pixar short really, really funny.

This was an exercise in playing up the characters and exaggerating the car and Mike's reactions. The end result is one of the funniest Pixar shorts created.

The Plot for Mike's New Car

Mike Wazowski is excited about showing off his new six-wheel drive sports car to his longtime friend, Sulley. He leads Sulley out the front door and proudly shows off the yellow mean machine.

Sulley's reaction is lukewarm and he asks Mike what was wrong with his old car. Mike excitedly tells Sulley to get in and being such a big guy, he can barely fit. So he plays around with the seat, adjusting it in every way imaginable, and he finally fits, but not before Mike about loses it.

Mike turns on the powerful engine, purring like a tiger, but the seat belt reminder dings, so they move to put on their seat belts. Only Mike's is stuck and he pulls and tugs on it until he falls out the door. Mike jumps around outside telling Sulley not to just sit there, push the button. Sulley looks at the dashboard and it is cluttered with many different buttons and dials; he's got no idea which button he's supposed to push.

He chooses the one he thinks will open the door, but it opens the hood, revealing the complex running machinery inside. Mike hops up and down trying to reach the top of the lifted hood but he's too short. To be helpful, Sulley reaches around and pushes the hood closed - right on Mike's fingers! Ha ha ha!

Sulley opens the hood again, which flings Mike in the air and he lands right on top of the grinding engine, bouncing around the gears. Sulley doesn't this and shuts the hood again, trapping Mike inside. But he cringes at the horrible noises coming out and then the mobile phone rings. Sulley answers it and Mike's voice yells at him to push the button!

The hood opens up again and Mike escapes, and gets back in the driver's seat, dirty and mad. Again the seat belt reminder dings, annoying Mike even more, but he puts the belt on with no problem. Only it makes the windshield wipers start! Sulley is about to say something but Mike demands that he not touch anything.

Mike pushes all sorts of buttons, turning the radio on loud, then the air conditioner blasting them, then the car alarm going off and the hood popping up and down again. It's a complete chaotic malfunction!

Pulling the key out of the ignition, Mike finally makes it stop and they both sigh with relief. But Sulley casually tries to straighten the rear view mirror, and it breaks off, sending Mike into a rage as he tells Sulley to get out of the car.

Mike speeds off in the car, off screen, and we hear him wreck and all six wheels roll back past Sulley. Sulley remarks that the airbag didn't go off, and we hear a pop and Mike is flying through the air. Sulley catches Mike with one hand, like a baseball, and they agree to walk to work that day at the end of this Pixar short film.
