Up Movie Characters:
Minor Characters

In the Up movie, there are only two minor characters who play enough of a role to be listed. And these characters are actually quite significant, even though we don't see them on screen for a more than a few minutes at a time. Who are they?

Kevin

This is the mysterious Beast of Paradise Falls that Charles Muntz has been searching for for years. Kevin is a 13-foot-tall, colorful flightless bird. Russell named this bird Kevin before he realizes she's a female who wants to protect her three babies.

Kevin comes across Russell as he and Carl are walking with the house through the jungle. Kevin nibbles on some of Russell's chocolate bar through the bushes. She loves Russell and likes to play and snuggle with him.

Kevin is also funny when she eats a balloon while hanging out on top of Carl's house. She swallows it and it pops when it fills out her neck. She then hawks out the deflated balloon with a silly noise. Kevin also has swallowed Carl's cane and spits it out again all full of slime. EWWW!!!

But Kevin can also be quite serious and she helps Carl and Russell escape the dogs who chase after them. She puts both Carl and Russell on her back so she can run at top speed and stay ahead of the dog pack.

Kevin needs to get back to her babies, who she calls out for. They all live in a labrynth of rocks where other explorers have disappeared when getting lost. She is reunited with her three youngins at the end of the Up movie, and they each take after their mother when they swallowed one of the tennis balls at the end of Carl's cane and then hawked it out again, covered in slime. Yucky, but boy are they cute little chickies.

Ellie

This is the love of Carl's life, an energetic and fun loving little girl, Ellie spent her entire life with Carl, later as his wife. She's optimistic by nature except for the one time she was told she could not bear children. But she grieved and then moved on, choosing happiness to fill her days with her husband.

Ellie was good about shrugging off the obstacles that life brought them as she and Carl saved for a trip to Paradise Falls. Even toward the end of her life she filled the pages of her adventure book with photos of herself and Carl and thanks him for the big adventure. She encourages him to have an adventure of his own, now that she is gone, and that gives Carl a new lease on life and turns his attitude around, finally bringing some happiness into his life.
