Up Movie Characters:
Charles Muntz's Dogs
In the Up movie, Charles Muntz is the villain. Since Muntz was a young man, he's been in the company of his dogs. At the beginning of Up, when Carl is a boy watching the newsreel of Charles Muntz's adventures, we see all the wonderful inventions Muntz has created for his dogs.
In the newsreel we see an automatic dog washer (and the dog does not look very happy) and also an automatic dog walker, which looks like a treadmill with built-in boots for the dog's feet.
All of Muntz's dogs in the present day have collars Muntz invented that have a way for the dogs to speak many different languages, although for our movie, they speak English. The collars are also outfitted with a tracking device and radio communication to the blimp.
Dug
This is probably the most expressive animated dog I've ever seen. In this Up movie, Dug's eyes are just like a dog's when he shows worry, excitement and affection. He especially loves squirrels, according to the fact that he talks about them all the time through his special collar.
Dug is a bit of a scapegoat by the other dogs in Muntz's pack. They send him on a "Special Mission" to keep a look out for the bird, all of which fail until he meets up with Carl and Russell as they walk along the plateau on their way to Paradise Falls.
When they all get back to the Spirit of Adventure, is put into the Cone of Shame for returning to Charles Muntz without the bird that he had briefly caught.
He helps Carl, Russell and Kevin escape when Muntz sets his dogs on them, and when Alpha throws Dug off a cliff, his Cone of Shame breaks off, and he was lucky to have landed on a ledge.
Dug is a very happy dog when Carl comes around and accepts him as his new master and once aboard the Spirit of Adventure to rescue Kevin, Dug slips another Cone of Shame over Alpha and in turn becomes the alpha male leader in Up. Since Dug has such a loving personality, the vicious dogs he rules over become happy and fun-loving, too.
Alpha
This scary looking doberman is the leader of Muntz's dog pack. bears his fangs and uses intimidation over the other dogs to maintain his authority. In the Up movie, his two underlings, Beta and Gamma, are always by his side to carry out his commands.
Just like Dug, Alpha has a collar that enables him to speak. But his has a wire loose and his voice comes out squeaky, like a mouse, which Russell prefers over the low, intimidating voice. It makes Alpha far less scary and the sound of his squeaky voice is really funny.
Alpha's name is not only a letter of the Greek alphabet, like Beta and Gamma, but it also denotes his rank - an alpha male is the leader. And he struts around and plays his role to a tee. Alpha takes his leadership role seriously using the tracking device Dug's collar to find out where he is, along with Kevin the bird.
Beta
Top tracking dog is Alpha's right hand helper and rottweiler. He's a clever dog, but becomes distracted easily, especially when he thinks Muntz is going to withhold treats! Beta's also the dog who describes Russell as the "small mailman".
Gamma
This bulldog is a chunky guy who slobbers a lot and is the third in command. is also an excellent tracking dog who flies a fighter bi-plane with skill. Gamma is also enthusiastic about catching a tennis ball.
