Hopper Returns to Ant Island

by Christine L. Charlemagne
(Quebec, Canada )

My favorite scene from the Pixar movie, A Bug’s Life, is when Hopper tells his followers why it’s necessary to go back to Ant Island. Originally, one of his followers suggested that they not go back because there was plenty of food leftover. Hopper makes his point that they have to go back because they can’t let the tiny, puny ants find out that they outnumber the grasshoppers a hundred to one. If that happened, then the grasshoppers’ way of life would be gone forever because the ants would learn how to stick up for themselves.

This is my favorite scene in A Bug's Life movie because it really establishes Hopper as a believable villain and adds a lot of depth. It also gives the audience a solid reason to be on the ants’ side and sets them up as the film’s underdogs who have a major problem to overcome.

Hopper was this movie’s most memorable character for me because he is not a typical villain; he is just a bug. But he is depicted in such a way that makes him truly authentic. When I watch this movie, I am always amazed at how I can view a grasshopper like I view him. He also had a lot of funny one liners—he was delightfully sarcastic, which is my favorite characteristic in a villain.

Hopper: The Classic, Memorable Villain

by Joe
(Buffalo, NY)

My favorite part of Pixar's A Bug's Life is definitely at the end of the movie where Hopper is finally defeated and is fed to the little (big in the movie) sparrows. When I saw that part, I had mixed feelings of excitement, sadness, and victory.

I was really happy the the bad guy in the movie was finally put to justice in the storyline and that gave me a sense of a happily ever after ending. I also felt sad because it seemed that hopper's death would be really gruesome. It also reminded me of how small the world presented in A Bug's Life movie is, I kind of forgot before how small the world can actually be.

Overall, it just gave a good conclusion to the Pixar movie and set up for a good ending. My favorite character once again was Hopper because he had a really unique character for a bad guy in the movie. He was tyrannic and also funny at the same time. I also felt that it was really clever to use a cricket/grasshopper as a villain for a children's movie, I will probably never view them the same again! I love the movie no matter what, and it is still one of my favorites!
