Monsters Inc. Characters:
Background Characters List
There are so MANY Monsters Inc. characters who are freaky creatures in Monstropolis - too many to name them all. If you get your hands on the Pixarpedia book, they've got a great description on pages 118-121, even describing the nameless ones!
One of my favorite nameless Monsters Inc. characters is the one that pops up in a reporters interview after little Boo jumped out at a sushi restaurant causing chaos and the CDA to come on site. He has dozens of eyeballs and he said that he saw the whole thing.
But this page is for the monsters who have minor roles in the film, so let's take a look at them and learn more about these characters.
Roz
She's hefty and annoying with a nasally-sounding voice. Roz looks like she could be Jabba the Hut's aunt, doncha think? She wears horn rimmed glasses, lipstick, a red sweater and her hair sticks straight up.
Roz is the Monsters Inc. character who is in charge of the scream canister paperwork and also holds the keys to all the doors in the vault. She goes strictly by the rules and does not give any leeway.
At the end of the movie, we learn that Roz is Agent #1 of the CDA, who had been working on busting Henry J. Waternoose for illegal activities. You gotta hand it to Roz, she had me fooled til the end!
Celia Mae
Celia is the receptionist at Monsters Inc and Mike Wazowski's girlfriend. Like Mike, she's also got one eye, but she's slender with octopus-like legs and has snakes for hair. Her snakes seem to react with her emotions and even have rattles that shake when she's angry.
Celia is excited about Mike taking her out to a nice restaurant for her birthday and together they get all mushy saying silly names with one another like googley bear. But in the middle of their date, Mike comes barging in with the human girl and chaos breaks loose and the CDA storms in, ruining her night with Mike.
While she's upset in the beginning, she helps Mike when he reaffirms his love for her. Celia sees that Mike is in danger from Randall, so she stalls Randall by making an announcement on the scare floor that he just broke the all-time scare record, buying some time for Mike and Sulley.
Child Detection Agency (CDA)
At Monsters Inc. and all the rest of Monstropolis, the CDA is a group that helps protect its citizens from contamination from children. They come in all shapes and sizes, but are all dressed in yellow haz-mat suits for protection.
The CDA methods for decontaminating an area or a monster are often humiliating and sometimes painful! But they are efficient and thorough. Agent #1 in the CDA is Roz.
At the end of Monsters Inc., the CDA is no longer needed as it exists. So they then become the Comedy Detection Agency, and they determine whether a joke is funny or not.
Yeti
A former employee of Monsters Inc., Yeti (aka the Abonimable Snow Man) is a monster who was banished from the monster world for unknown reasons. He makes his home in the Himalayan mountains and likes his environment.
Yeti is a happy-go-lucky kind of monster and welcomes Mike and Sulley into his home. As a gracious host, he keeps offering snow cones to them, and eventually he annoys them. I found Yeti to be one of my favorite characters in Monsters Inc.; he's just so likable!
Needleman & Smitty
Both these Monsters Inc. characters work on the scare floor and general maintenance for Monsters Inc. Needleman is the longish brown fellow with a knob nose and Smitty is the goofy fat green one. Both are really nerdy and they idolize Sulley.
Pete "Claws" Ward
Claws Ward is a blue monster with a huge mouth full of razor sharp teeth and two long rubbery arms. He's really scary looking, but is timid enough that at one point he was seen returning to the scare floor screaming and crying, the teleportation closet door was then shredded.
Bile
He's the trainee monster at the beginning of Monsters Inc. who has four rubbery arms, short, stumpy legs and purple spikes on the back of his head. Bile is one of those characters who can't get much right as he messes up time and again during his testing. And to top all that - he's rather cowardly, too!
Flint
Ms. Flint is a thin orange monster in a business suit and she has big round eyes set into what look like small webbed frog feet; she looks like an amphibian. Flint's job at Monsters Inc. is to oversee the training for newbie scarers and she's tired of dealing with the cowardly monsters.
Fungus
Three-eyed Fungus is a Monsters Inc. character who wears glasses and is a small red monster with chicken legs. He's Randall Boggs' friend and assistant, although he's kind of spineless in the face of Randall's overwhelming personality.
Fungus is a good guy deep down; he feels remorse for helping Randall with the scream extractor, and he even apologizes to Mike after his capture. Once Monsters Inc. is turned around to making children laugh, Fungus is a much happier monster.
