Toy Story 3 Characters: Buzz Lightyear

Buzz Lightyear

Buzz returns as another of the leading Toy Story 3 characters as he leads the rest of Andy's gang to Sunnyside Daycare after he and the rest thought they were meant to be thrown away as garbage.

At Sunnyside, Andy's toys are assigned to the Caterpillar Room and Buzz and the gang are terribly mistreated by children who don't know how to play properly. That night, Buzz decides to go on a mission to find Lotso and discuss a room reassignment for all of them. Seeing Ken and Twitch walking down the dimly lit hallway, Buzz quietly follows them up inside a vending machine where he spies Lotso's companions gambling for batteries while they gossip about the newcomers.

Just then, Buzz is caught, tied up and brought to Lotso for questioning. Buzz tells Lotso he doesn't want to be in the Caterpillar room and Lotso agrees that Buzz could change rooms, but not his friends. Buzz rejects that offer and so Lotso has his minions switch Buzz back into "Demo" mode where he thinks he is a real space ranger with a soldier's obedience to Lotso's orders. Lotso further manipulates Buzz by stating that the daycare center is Star Command and that the rest of Andy's toys are on Zurg's side.

Completely brainwashed, Buzz returns with Lotso and locks up his friends. By this time his the Toy Story 3 characters have figured out that he's in demo mode and as part of their escape plan, they have Barbie get the user manual to fix him.

In the meantime, Rex and Hamm start fighting with each other to get Buzz's attention and they pull a clear plastic bin down over Buzz, holding him captive until Barbie returns with the manual.

They get the user manual after Barbie subjects her cruel methods upon Ken, but Rex holds his finger on the reset button for too long and it puts Buzz into Spanish mode, where he is a smooth talker and graceful dancer, and also completely smitten with Jessie. He calls her his desert flower and sweeps her off her feet, which weirds her out at first, but she's quickly overcome by his charms.

But in Spanish Mode, Buzz is not a soldier following Lotso's orders any longer, and he tags along with the rest of the Toy Story 3 characters as they make their escape, not quite understanding what's happening because he doesn't understand English.

Once inside the dump truck, a large TV crash lands on top of Buzz and that shakes him out of Spanish mode, and he's his old self again. He protects Jessie throughout their harrowing ordeal at the dump and they remain close.

When the toys bid Woody farewell (before Woody posts the note on the box) Buzz and Woody shake hands and say goodbye. It's so sweet and touching. Jessie later comments that she knows about Buzz's Spanish mode, to which he looks at her puzzled, and at the end of the film, during the ending credits and all the Toy Story 3 characters are together, we see Buzz and Jessie dancing to the Spanish version of You've Got a Friend in Me. It's a great way to end the last film in the Toy Story trilogy.
